Charles Laughton (/ ˈlɔːtən /; [1] 1 July – 15 December ) was a British and American actor. He was trained in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and first appeared professionally on the stage in Charles Laughton. Actor: Mutiny on the Bounty. Charles Laughton was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, to Eliza (Conlon) and Robert Laughton, hotel keepers of Irish and English descent, respectively. He was educated at Stonyhurst (a highly esteemed Jesuit college in England) and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (received gold medal).
