António Emílio Leite Couto, better known as Mia Couto (born 5 July ), [1] is a Mozambican writer. [2] He won the Camões Prize in , the most important literary award in the Portuguese language, and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in ” Couto was born Ant ô nio Em í lio Leite Couto in in Beira, Mozambique ’ s second largest city. The nickname “ Mia ” dates back to his childhood. His literary ambitions were inherited from his father, an administrator for the railroad system who also wrote poetry and served as a newspaper editor.
