Sir Richard Francis Burton, KCMG, FRGS, (19 March – 20 October ) was a British explorer, army officer, writer and scholar. [1][2] He was famed for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa and South America, as well as his extensive knowledge of languages and cultures, speaking up to 29 different languages. Sir Richard Burton, English scholar-explorer and Orientalist who was the first European to discover Lake Tanganyika and to penetrate hitherto-forbidden Muslim cities. He published 43 volumes on his explorations and almost 30 volumes of translations, including an unexpurgated translation of The Arabian Nights.
